In this article, we&#8217;ll discuss another popular topic: salicylate intolerance, associated health problems, and ways to ease the problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_Salicylate_Intolerance\"><\/span>What is Salicylate Intolerance?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A salicylate allergy (also called salicylate intolerance or salicylate sensitivity) is a reaction that happens from the ingestion or contact with even small doses of salicylic acid, or salicylate<span id='easy-footnote-3-1972' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.nutriiq.ca\/wordpress\/recognize-and-manage-salicylate-intolerance\/#easy-footnote-bottom-3-1972' title='Salicylate Allergy. Downloaded from Webmd on Jan. 29, 2021'><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. Salicylate intolerance has been known for more than 100 years. Many substances contain different amounts of salicylate: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>foods, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>plants,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>medications:  COX-inhibitors i.e. acetilic salicylic acid (aspirin), NSAIDs, or related chemicals, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cosmetic products <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Salicylate intolerance affects up to 0.6-2.5% of the general population, and about 10-20% of asthmatics<span id='easy-footnote-4-1972' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.nutriiq.ca\/wordpress\/recognize-and-manage-salicylate-intolerance\/#easy-footnote-bottom-4-1972' title='Baenkler H. The normal Western diet has 10-100 mg of naturally occurring salicylates going from fruits, vegetables, nuts, herbs and spices, jams, honey, tea, coffee, wines, and other plant-derived foods and drinks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Root_Causes_of_Salicylate_Intolerance\"><\/span>Root Causes of Salicylate Intolerance<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Salicylate sensitivity stems from the decreased ability to properly metabolize and excrete salicylates from the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a theory that the Phenol Sulfur-Transferase enzyme is responsible for the breakdown and detoxification of salicylates from foods<span id='easy-footnote-5-1972' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.nutriiq.ca\/wordpress\/recognize-and-manage-salicylate-intolerance\/#easy-footnote-bottom-5-1972' title='Priyadarsini KI. With the deficiency of this enzyme, caused by the expression of\u00a0<strong>PST genes<\/strong>, salicylate intolerance is very possible. As with other xenobiotics (ingested substances that are foreign to human body and in excess can harm it) salycilates can harm those who lacks ability to process and excrete them properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider dual effect of aspirin, the commercially available salicylate. Salicylate reactions can be quite severe and include anaphylaxis. Salicylate reactions often blend with other conditions and if not addressed, can be quite harmful. In: StatPearls Treasure Island (FL): StatPearls Publishing; 2020 Jan-.'><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not completely clear exactly what causes salicylate allergy, but it is confirmed that those reactions lead to inflammation and other symptoms.  As we mentioned, the classic Samter triad of salicylate intolerance includes: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bronchial asthma, wheezing and trouble breathing; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nasal and sinus polyps; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sensitivity to aspirin or NSAIDs. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These symptoms can be sometimes mistaken for general allergies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The major negative respiratory and circulatory effects of salicylates were described 70 years ago in <span id='easy-footnote-12-1972' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.nutriiq.ca\/wordpress\/recognize-and-manage-salicylate-intolerance\/#easy-footnote-bottom-12-1972' title='S.M.
